Our approach to ESG

Engagement

We are active managers of the assets we own and work closely with our portfolio companies to improve disclosure, transparency and reporting.

Why we engage

Engagement is an important tool in managing risk and building relationships with our portfolio companies. It enhances understanding of investments, provides insight into investment quality and resilience and, over time, strengthens companies by improving their quality, processes, transparency and resilience.

ESG is a priority and core value at AIP and our ESG programme is based on robust policies and implementation processes, as well as transparency and reporting. This is evidenced by a disciplined approach and superior ESG performance.

Highlights include:

  • ESG Culture: These efforts lead to ESG being a “top-of-mind” issue throughout the organization and create a strong ESG culture at AIP, as well as identifying any ESG-related risks and opportunities.
  • UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI) Assessment: For 2020, the latest available assessment results, AIP-managed Funds earned an A+ rating for Strategy and Governance and an A rating among Infrastructure fund managers, at the top of the range.
  • GRESB Infrastructure Assessment:Funds II and III earned scores of 88 and 86, respectively, in 2021 – near top of the range of Fund Manager scores and vs. 72 GRESB average. All eligible AIP portfolio companies complete the GRESB assessment annually.
  • TCFD: AIP’s commitment to transparency and external frameworks is further strengthened as we are a supporter of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

  • AIP’s Annual Internal ESG Compliance and Risk Review Process: In addition to participating in and reporting based on these external frameworks, AIP conducts its own internal ESG Compliance and Risk Review process annually. This includes both policy review and compliance, performance monitoring and specific initiatives related to a broad range of ESG topics.
  • ESG Leadership and Process Integration: AIP ESG policy requires that ESG topics are considered by the Investment Committee throughout the investment process, beginning with transaction screening and due diligence. ESG is reviewed at every Monthly Portfolio Review presented to the Investment Committee and is included as an agenda item at every Board meeting. AIP believes that, ultimately, this contributes to superior realization outcomes and returns to investors.
